A Selection Method for Power Generation Plants Used for Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS)

چکیده
As a promising and advanced technology, enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) can be used to generate electricity using deep geothermal energy. In order to better utilize the EGS to produce electricity, power cycles’ selection maps are generated for people to choose the best system based on the geofluids’ temperature and dryness conditions. Optimizations on double-flash system (DF), flash-organic Rankine cycle system (FORC), and double-flash-organic Rankine cycle system (DFORC) are carried out, and the single-flash (SF) system is set as a reference system. The results indicate that each upgraded system (DF, FORC, and DFORC) can produce more net power output compared with the SF system and can reach a maximum net power output under a given geofluid condition. For an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) using R245fa as working fluid, the generated selection maps indicate that using the FORC system can produce more power than using other power cycles when the heat source temperature is below 170 ̋C. Either DF or DFORC systems could be an option if the heat source temperature is above 170 ̋C, but the DF system is more attractive under a relatively lower geofluid’s dryness and a higher temperature condition.

Comparative Analysis of Power Plant Options for Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS)
Enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) extract heat from underground hot dry rock (HDR) by first fracturing the HDR and then circulating a geofluid (typically water) into it and bringing the heated geofluid to a power plant to generate electricity. This study focuses on analysis, examination, and comparison of leading geothermal power plant configurations with a geofluid temperature from 200 to 800 ...

A set of key issues pertaining to the environmental performance of geothermal electric power have been addressed. They include: 1) greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from geothermal facilities, 2) the use of supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) as a geofluid for enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), 3) quantifying the impact of well field exploration on the life cycle of geothermal power, and finally ...
متن کاملGeothermal Power Growth 1995–2013—A Comparison with Other Renewables
Based on global statistical data the current status of deep geothermal resource utilization for electricity generation is presented. Particular attention is paid to growth rates. The rates are compared with those of other renewable energies (biomass, hydro, solar photovoltaic (PV), wind). Whereas wind and solar PV exhibit annual growth rates of 25%–30% since 2004, geothermal growth is only abou...
متن کاملAssessment of the resource base for engineered geothermal systems in Great Britain
Background Engineered or enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) have been promoted as a technology that exploits geothermal heat and power production from regions of the crust devoid of shallow high enthalpy reservoirs (also referred to as high-grade hydrothermal resources) (e.g., MIT 2006). The status of EGS development was reviewed by Breede et al. (2013) who reported on 14 EGS projects that were ...
